+title: a new focus for my running
+date: 02/03/2025
+author: thomas bruce
+---
+
+i'm running a trail marathon on may third, and i've totally abandoned my
+training... so i have some goals and ideas for the rest of this year.
+
+first, it is worth analysing the root causes of me abandoning my training:
+
+- school: i've been busy working on assignments, prepping for midterms, etc.
+- social life: i get caught up in social complexities
+- laziness
+- distractions
+- loneliness: my training partner is abroad this semester and there are very few
+distance runners on campus
+
+school is an easy problem to work with: run when i'm not working on schoolwork.
+the social aspect is a little harder, but still fairly easy to work around: set
+good boundaries about communication and run when i want to. laziness and
+distractions are more difficult to solve, but still not impossible. i just need
+to re-form some good habits.
+
+### march-june
+i need to get up to a weekly distance of 95 km/week by mid-to-end june.
+
+#### phase 1: base rebuilding (march)
+re-establishing consistent running volume and my aerobic base. keeping most runs
+in zone 2. incorporating gentle strides and hills to prepare for returning to
+speed work, but retaining a low intensity. cross-training goal is 20km biking,
+30 minutes of core work, and 10 minutes of back and arm work per week. by the
+end of march, i ought to be averaging 60 km/week.
+
+#### phase 2: marathon prep (april)
+increasing mileage towards pre-race peak (~75km). extending long runs back to
+the half-marathon range and above. hill training. tapering off the last week and
+a half to recover for the marathon.
+
+#### phase 3: post-marathon recovery and focus shift (may 4 to may 18)
+recovering from the marathon and resuming training. take two days off post race.
+all runs in the week after should be under 8km, minimal cross training. do yoga.
+week after should begin to move back into the 50km range.
+
+#### phase 4: high mileage build and speed workouts (may - june)
+safe buildup to 95 km/week range. my training partner gets back from his trip
+abroad around this time, so i'll have someone to do long runs with again. 80/20
+rule, occasional fartlek runs on the highschool track near my parents' house.
+i'll be home from school, so i can run on the mountain for training again.
+
+### next steps
+from here, i should be good to return to my normal training, just at a higher
+weekly distance load. i'm running the 5k summer classic race in my town, as well
+as a 10k trail race in august, so i should have some good goals to work toward
+once the marathon is behind me. i need to keep up winter training again because
+i'd love to do the rock the ridge 50-miler next may...
+
+### some notes on nutrition and physicality
+i got a lab draw recently, turns out i'm deficient in vitamin d and ferritin, so
+i'm suplementing both. as such, i'm going to a nutritionist to rework my diet,
+since i'm definitely not eating enough or fueling properly on runs.
+
+as a result of my low load these past weeks, i've been experiencing more back
+pain and tiredness. naturally, i sleep better when i'm running more, and so i
+expect my tiredness to go away once i am back at a normal volume. the back pain,
+however, is a bit concerning, so i'll need to take extra caution that i don't
+cause any worse pain.

-
hello, world!

-
hello, world!

-
this is my first blog post here, and really ever. going to be
-interesting to see if i upkeep this as frequently as i would like. this
-post is just to get some basic information out of the way, so i can
-write freely and answer any questions which might be had.

-
about me:

-
my name is thomas bruce. i am a computer science (software
-engineering) student and mathematics student in the hudson valley, new
-york. i’ve independently been studying computing and maths for some
-years prior, however. other academic interests of mine include botany,
-climatology, and political theory.

-
hobbies of mine include: long-distance running, reading (mostly
-philosophy or other nonfiction areas), cooking, torturing myself
-(writing software), and having fun (writing software)

-
obviously this not an all-encompassing biography.

-
some random
-points/disclaimers

-
there are some important things to get out of the way:

-
what’s with the lack of
-capitalization?

-
i prefer to keep my writing (outside of academic writing) in all
-lowercase for a few reasons:

-

- it looks better to me
-- it works well with my font
-- my wpm increases slightly

-
if you don’t like it, write a tampermonkey script to capitalize my
-site, and share it for free on a non-restrictive platform.

-
my politics

-
while i will continue to maintain that politics aren’t the sole
-defining feature of an individual, it is nothing but fair to give a bit
-of a bias disclaimer about my poltical leanings. my political writings
-will (unless my mind is changed) be coming from a more lib-left slant
-than anything else. i will be wrong about things, or disagree with you
-on things, and that is ok! friction in the physical world releases
-energy, which has an effect on its surroundings. it is the same with
-disagreement among individuals; disagreement is nothing but the
-potential for further learning and understanding.

-
i do hold that there is a fundamental difference between politics and
-politicking about social issues. i will differentiate between the two in
-my writings.

-
thoughts on identity

-
i take a sligtly more “free” approach to identity than some of my
-peers, based on a loose interpretation of karl popper’s philosophies:
-identity is not based in the determinism of historical materialism,
-i.e. it is not merely a result of conditions and intrinsic stati, but
-more due to individual’s ability to reason critically and their choices
-thereof. it is my opinion that when the self is boiled down to a set of
-terms (labels) or (heaven forbid) diagnoses, it becomes an
-externally-mediated concept rather than an actual personal identity. it
-becomes a surface-level conceptualization of what it means to be “me”,
-rather than a deep knowledge of one’s self. it becomes a way to explain
-away the behaviours, quirks, idiosyncrasies, and more as due to a
-diagnosis or label or distinction of some other kind rather than the
-mild differences which we all hold from each other.

-
i don’t want it to be thought that i reject the comfort aspect of
-labels, however. i just think that there is so much more to identity
-than words and phrases. but i do think that this trend, ironically,
-serves to perpetuate what was antithetical to both marx’ and popper’s
-ideologies: it continues to create hierarchies and social distinctions
-which do nothing but hinder individuality at its purist form.

-
outro

-
that about sums it up for this post. looking forward to writing my
-next one.
